Gabi ArthurMr. Moody ELA 8 Block Blue 2 3 March 2017 Dangerous Murders? Or Innocent Kids? “As an adult, he became known for independence, moodiness, aggressiveness, and erratic behavior often punctuated by bouts of heavy drinking” (“The Child Soldier on Trial at Guantanamo”). This is how many child soldiers end up if they are not disciplined and held responsible for their crimes. Child soldiers are children under the age of 18 that are recruited to fight for a country's army in war. Child soldiers commit some of the worse acts of war such as, mass killings, deaths of innocent citizens, and more dangerous crimes. Countries that are dealing with this issue are Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo and many other middle eastern countries. The controversial issue is becoming more world wide spread as more and more civil wars are arising. Child soldiers are perpetrators because http://allafrica.com/download/pic/main/main/csiid/00110723:5aefd1a80993d0b435b3c35552ae30d2:arc495x324:w495:us1.jpg they commit illegal acts of war, they know what they are getting into, and they rely on the commanders to provide them with dangerous drugs and alcohol. A child soldier named Omar Khadr 16, had bragged about killing a U.S. soldier and he claimed “the day he planted land mines to kill U.S. and coalition forces was the happiest day of his life” (“Child Soldiers Victims Or Perpetrators”). Child soldiers are perpetrators who commit some of the most harsh acts of war and feel pride with it. The definition of perpetrator is “a person who carries out a harmful, illegal, or immoral act”. Child soldiers harm innocent people and are responsible for lots of dangerous crimes of war that would make them perpetrator. Most importantly, “Child soldiers have been responsible for brutal acts in wartime-rape and mutilation and mass killings of innocent civilians” (“Child Soldiers Should Be Prosecuted This”). evidence suggests that child soldiers are proud of themselves for killings others, this is what they have grown up doing. This shows they aren’t just innocent because they are young, they commit harmful and hateful crimes that are just as bad as their elders. Once they are recruited the children become over reliant over their commanders. They expect their commanders to provide them with food, water, shelter, money, alcohol and drugs. After that the soldiers find it extremely difficult to leave. In some cases child soldiers choose to become soldiers. They go into the war seeking vengeance, alcohol, and sometimes drugs. Many times they are also provided the decision to leave but stay because they like the idea of getting there anger out through murder and have become reliant on their commander for drugs and other harmful things. On the other hand child soldiers are persecuted, forced into war, forced into killing innocent civilians including family members. But, I’m not asking for these kids to be put behind bars for the rest of their lives, I am asking for these kids to be held accountable for their crimes. These children need be are cared for and disciplined through behavioral correction schools that will teach them discipline, and that their crimes were wrong and very hateful. In conclusion child soldiers should be accountable for their actions no matter how much force was put into their decisions, they remained in the army even when the chance to leave came up, and they have committed some of the worse acts of war. Even though a lot of children get dragged to war they choose to stay afterwards because they feel good committing the crimes they do. Sometimes they even rely on their commanders to provide them with drugs and alcohol. Child soldiers are perpetrators and should be punished just like any average soldier for their actions.

During the civil rights movement Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X both had the same goal, of achieving equal rights among minorities and whites. The civil rights movement was a mass popular movement to make right between whites and blacks equal. The difference between these two powerful historic men Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X is that they had different ways of attempting to achieve this difficult goal. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in non-violent peaceful acts to achieve his goal. He won the Noble Peace prize in 1964, becoming one of his greatest accomplishments. To prove his non-violent ways by saying in his famous I have a dream speech “ One day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” By saying this he means that he wants people of all races to get along and have peace and not have to solve the problem with violence. Also in his famous speech he stated “Nineteen sixty three is not an end, but a beginning.” and by saying this he means that he wants to end segregation and he wants to end it in that year. So Martin Luther King Jr. was a non violent activist trying to put a stop on segregation. On the other hand Malcolm first believed he has to fight fire with fire. Malcolm also once said that “When I say fight for independence right here, I don’t mean non-violent fight, or turn the other cheek fight. Those days are gone. Those days are over.” This sentence proves how Malcolm didn’t want non violent protests and believed that the only way to win was through a physical battle. One of the other things that where similar between the two men besides there belief in racial equality was that they where both assassinated. The men where killed for there belief. Other people where scared of change and thought that whites and blacks should remain separated, but even though the men knew that they could be killed they still stood up for what they believed in. By: Gabi Arthur My mom sits in the front seat of the car as we speed towards home, after a long day of grocery shopping. Suddenly we lurched to a stop. “What’s going on?” Gabi asked. “There’s a big rock in the middle of the road,” said mom. Soon we were moving again but not forward, my mom was reversing the car to park on the side of the road a few feet away from the rock. “Why are we pulling over for a rock?” Gabi questioned. “I think that’s a animal!” Mom exclaimed. I sprinted out of the car to see that she was right. In the middle of the road sat a huge injured tortoise. The large animal had obviously been hit by a car Gabi thought outloud. The tortoise's face was gushing blood. “OH MY GOSH EWWWW!” Gabi’s little sister Maya squealed as she dove headfirst back into the car. “Mom, what should we do, the turtle is still alive and we can’t just leave it here,” Gabi said. We all think back to the sad day that we left an injured animal on the road. **** The previous summer as Gabi and her mom were driving down the road they saw an injured cardinal sitting in the road. They debated whether to stop or not and decided not to because we expected it to fly way. We served around it quickly passing it hoping the person behind us avoided hitting it. My mom unfortunately looked back in the rearview mirror just in time to see the poor bird get flattened. Gabi and her family didn't want a repeat of the tragic experience from last summer. **** “We need to bring him to an expert and quick before it loses too much blood.” Mom quickly explained. Gabi quickly pulled out her phone and pulled up the name and address of a retired vet who still helps save injured animals, who lives right down the street from where we are. “Ok we have an empty cardboard box and blanket in the trunk, Gabi and Bri lift up the turtle and place it in the box,” Mom said efficiently. Gabi counted down before they lifted the injured tortoise into the box and then into the trunk of the car where Bri stayed with the box next to her. As we were driving to the vet's house Gabi look over the back seat to check on Bri and the tortoise, and I see Bri staring at the turtle in the box who had some kind of liquid all around it…..pee. “I think the tortoise is a little nervous!” Bri annonces as all start cracking up while Bri is still fuming about having to sit in the trunk with the tortoise and it’s pee. Soon enough after a quick car ride (My mom’s a fast driver when she wants to be) we arrived at the door with the tortoise. We rang the doorbell twice and the vet came right away. “Ooh,” she said. “That looks bad.” “I know it was just sitting in the middle of the road,” I said sadly suddenly mad at all the people who saw it but kept driving. The lady took the cardboard box containing the turtle breaking my thoughts. About ten minutes later the lady came back with some depressing news. “This tortoise has a major concussion, has a broken most of the bones on the right side of her face, and has fractured jaw and eye socket, but she is very fortunate that you found her in time, she wouldn’t of lasted much longer,” the vet said. “So you can fix her,” I asked with a deep concern for our new friend. “Yes it will take a couple of months but after that she should be all ready to be released back to the wild.” “It’s a she?” Maya asked who just arrived from the car. “Yes and she was most likely going across the street to find a mate, I need to get working right away though, so thank you so much for saving this tortoise and I would be more than happy to give you statice reports on how she’s doing,” explained vet. “Yes that would be wonderful,” my mom said as they traded phone numbers. “It was nice meeting you,” I said. “Nice to meet you to and thanks for your help!” The vet said as she closed the door. My mom sits in the front seat of the car, us all thinking about the adventure that we had just had. |
